KPIs that Power Legal Teams

I’ve been focusing more on legal ops lately, and one thing stands out: most teams think they’re further behind than they actually are. After reading the brilliant 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘒𝘗𝘐𝘴 by Mori Kabiri, I’ve been helping in-house legal teams assess their operational maturity using the four-pillar framework: 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: Do you have the right skills and expertise? Are you more proactive or reactive? How do you handle difficult matters? 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Are your processes driving results or dragging you down? Where can you unlock quick wins? Even small improvements compound over time. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵: Is your tech stack delivering results or just racking up costs? Are you using legal-specific tools or just making do with generic systems? Who is stepping up as your team’s CTO? 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮: Can you clearly demonstrate your team’s value to the business? Are you tracking the right metrics, telling the right story, and making evidence-based decisions? Without actionable data, you’re flying blind. I ask teams to rate themselves one to four on each pillar. Most are stronger than they realise and gain clarity on their blind spots. Right now, I’m working with several innovative legal leaders to transform their legal operations and I’m always happy to connect with new teams who are ready to level up. Legal Operations KPIs book is laid out so simply, and it's very clear. It gives you some relevance. It's history to why we track these, why they're important. If you can't afford to bring all these resources in to do these programs, start here.

Resources are important when you're trying to learn, and books like "Legal Operations KPIs", are important to look and, navigate and understand and how you take that truth from that book and make it your own in your organization.

I’m jumping on the bandwagon of those who already recommended the book—and that just confirms it’s definitely worth reading. You can find a lot of content about KPIs and OKRs in general, and there’s plenty of talk about how Legal Operations provides value to an organization. But I’ve never seen such a precise analysis and listing of metrics that are specifically suited to provide evidence of that value through reliable data. I’m glad I read it before tackling some KPI-related topics this year—and I’ll certainly recommend it to the team.

I had a chance to skim through the pre-release copy and I am impressed!

Mori Kabiri what’s gonna be on the final?

As somebody who has been tasked with heading up a legal operation department, this book has been very helpful and detailed to give me a better idea of what to look and aim for in efficiently running the law department. I recommend it for anyone who is beginning to create a Legal Operations department or is already involved but looking to further their progress.
