📬 Last Friday's mail delivered me some weekend reading. I've browsed this through over the weekend and here's why you should consider buying it too ⤵️ 👩💻Background: I've studied operations management at uni. This means basic operational metrics and concepts, like throughput time, cycle time and line balancing are very familiar to me. It comes as no surprise that this book has some legal-specific metrics that I could also call something else in traditional ops management lingo. BUT. If you do not have a degree in this field, this book brings you plenty more than the basics – put in a legal context! Instead of explaining specifically how for example throughput time can be utilized in a legal ops context, you can eg. just have a read about MAA (read the book if you want to know what it is 😉). 📖 The layout of each spread on each metric is well thought out and repeats itself. If you are struggling with a specific issue, you can start browsing and easily comparing various metrics to establish which could help you track and collect data on the situation.
This book is an excellent resource for KPIs for anyone involved in legal operations. The QR codes are very convenient for going to specific section online. The author does an excellent job providing suggestions for trend analysis.
I’ve been focusing more on legal ops lately, and one thing stands out: most teams think they’re further behind than they actually are. After reading the brilliant 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘒𝘗𝘐𝘴 by Mori Kabiri, I’ve been helping in-house legal teams assess their operational maturity using the four-pillar framework: 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: Do you have the right skills and expertise? Are you more proactive or reactive? How do you handle difficult matters? 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Are your processes driving results or dragging you down? Where can you unlock quick wins? Even small improvements compound over time. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵: Is your tech stack delivering results or just racking up costs? Are you using legal-specific tools or just making do with generic systems? Who is stepping up as your team’s CTO? 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮: Can you clearly demonstrate your team’s value to the business? Are you tracking the right metrics, telling the right story, and making evidence-based decisions? Without actionable data, you’re flying blind. I ask teams to rate themselves one to four on each pillar. Most are stronger than they realise and gain clarity on their blind spots. Right now, I’m working with several innovative legal leaders to transform their legal operations and I’m always happy to connect with new teams who are ready to level up. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆?
Love this, Mori! You are King of the KPIs.
Ordered. As always, I recommend that law firms know their clients' KPIs too.
I found a book that is providing me with keys and methodical steps to optimize the management of Legal Operations, so that the Legal Departments go from being a "cost/expense center" to a center that provides value and legal data to companies. I thank Mori Kabiri for being able to translate your book into Spanish and thus share your knowledge. Definitely, from an innovative and practical point of view, it is re-focusing my way of seeing legal management with data, metrics and results, demonstrating that lawyers can also be forward-thinking and make decisions with data. For anyone who wants to transform their area, management or law firm, this is an essential bedside book to start or complement their digital transformation process.
