This isn't a book that just sits on a shelf. Believe me - I enjoyed reading it so much, I took it with me on a holiday trip as my hobby read. (I will admit I am a data nerd but still.) What I appreciate most about this book is its practicality. Mori's approach is straightforward and focused on application, which makes the book accessible regardless of your expertise level. The inclusion of digital resources via QR codes and the detailed explanations of each KPI make this a tool I can use consistently to make informed decisions and improve our department's performance and reputation. I appreciate it not only for its depth in legal metrics but also for its broader application across other business functions like compliance and finance. I suspect this text is secretly useful for law firms and vendors as well. Understanding the intricacies of how corporate legal departments operate can be challenging. Legal Operations KPIs acts like a cheat code, offering insights into corporate needs and expectations, which can significantly enhance the services providers offer. As someone deeply involved in our legal department, Legal Operations KPIs has proven to be a highly useful guide. For anyone in a legal operations role looking to make a tangible impact, I'd recommend this book.
For the most part, Legal Ops is a relatively new role in terms of a "title" but many people have been doing to work for years. Mori's book serves as the infrastructure. It provides tangible workflows that are extremely detailed and in my opinion his work is the anchor or underpinning to any Legal Ops team. I am only half way through the book and find myself pausing to contemplate how to fold these concepts into my workflows, hence the tags/markers on the margin to make sure I go back! These KPI's are in such demand and ultimately provide the organization with detailed analysis to unpack efficiencies, areas for improvement, shifts in spend, etc. The digital version of the book which is accessible via your hard copy fosters a culture for submitting questions and knowledge sharing which makes us all better!
I’ve been focusing more on legal ops lately, and one thing stands out: most teams think they’re further behind than they actually are. After reading the brilliant 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘒𝘗𝘐𝘴 by Mori Kabiri, I’ve been helping in-house legal teams assess their operational maturity using the four-pillar framework: 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: Do you have the right skills and expertise? Are you more proactive or reactive? How do you handle difficult matters? 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Are your processes driving results or dragging you down? Where can you unlock quick wins? Even small improvements compound over time. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵: Is your tech stack delivering results or just racking up costs? Are you using legal-specific tools or just making do with generic systems? Who is stepping up as your team’s CTO? 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮: Can you clearly demonstrate your team’s value to the business? Are you tracking the right metrics, telling the right story, and making evidence-based decisions? Without actionable data, you’re flying blind. I ask teams to rate themselves one to four on each pillar. Most are stronger than they realise and gain clarity on their blind spots. Right now, I’m working with several innovative legal leaders to transform their legal operations and I’m always happy to connect with new teams who are ready to level up. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆?
In the process of reviewing and taking a deep dive into the legal ops universe and how to build success. A must read for anyone in the legal services space.
Mori Kabiri wrote an awesome book on ops KPIs. I’m currently using it to develop a dashboard and benchmarking program for my L&C team!
No doubt it will be as valuable as Legal Operations KPIs.
I had a chance to skim through the pre-release copy and I am impressed!
From an in-house perspective, your point about AI making work faster but not automatically cheaper really resonates. We’re under constant pressure to demonstrate value internally, so partnering with outside counsel who can measure and communicate impact, beyond just hours billed, is key. The KPIs and frameworks you’ve pulled together feel like exactly the kind of shared language that helps us align expectations and make smarter decisions together.
