Data-Driven Legal Operations

Transforming Databases into Informed Decisions

Delivered online as part of the University of Passau’s LL.M. Legal Informatics practical lecture series, this guest lecture explored how legal organizations can transform raw operational data into meaningful insights and informed business decisions. Mori Kabiri traced the evolution of legal data and technology, from paper records and standardized billing data to modern matter-management systems, business intelligence, automation, and artificial intelligence. He also introduced students to the development of legal operations and the diverse career opportunities emerging within the field.

Through practical examples involving legal spending, invoice processing, contract cycle times, client satisfaction, compliance, and litigation risk, Mori explained how legal teams can derive and evaluate targeted KPIs from information held across billing, contract, matter-management, and regulatory systems. The lecture also addressed data quality, standardization, privacy, and ethical data management before demonstrating how accurate visualization and data storytelling can improve the interpretation of legal analyses and help decision-makers act with greater confidence.
