The Future Lawyer

The Future of Commercial Law Careers in the AI Era

Delivered for Swansea University’s Shipping and Trade LL.M. cohort as part of the Employability Skills in the Commercial and Maritime Industry course, this guest lecture explored how the legal profession has evolved over the past 30 years and how students can prepare for an AI-accelerated, global market.

Mori Kabiri examined how technology, changing client expectations, new service-delivery models, regulation, and international competition are reshaping legal careers. The session introduced expanding opportunities across private practice, in-house teams, legal operations, legal technology, managed services, compliance, and public policy. Practical examples demonstrated how data, workflows, and KPIs can improve efficiency, manage risk, and connect legal work with measurable outcomes—particularly in commercial, shipping, insurance, trade, and dispute-related contexts.
